Why is Lassi so popular?
Oh, that’s an EASY one!
Lassi is popular for a lot of reasons:
– First, it’s super cooling, as the yogurt base helps cool your body from the inside out.
– Great for digestion — especially after a heavy meal, since it contains probiotics that keep your gut happy and aid digestion. That’s why it’s often paired Indian food, because as you know it, it’s spicy!
– Another reason? Endless variety! Whether you love the sweet, salty, or prefer it spicy, there’s a lassi for every mood.
– Plus, it’s natural and nutritious — packed with protein, calcium, and good bacteria, all without artificial additives.
It’s a simple, wholesome traditional drink that has stood the test of time.
Have you tried it? 😃
But wait! Don’t taste it alone — Instead, have it with an Indian meal from our nepalese restaurant in Lisbon:
What is the difference between Lassi and a Smoothie?
Lassi comes from India, while smoothies have a more Western vibe.
The BIG difference? The base! Lassi is all about yogurt, giving it that thick, creamy texture.
Smoothies, on the other hand, can be made with milk, yogurt, or even plant-based options like almond or oat milk. That’s why smoothies often feel lighter and sometimes frostier.
When it comes to flavours, lassi keeps it simple—either sweet with mango, coconut or natural. Smoothies? They’re a free-for-all of fruits, veggies, protein powders, and anything else you can blend.
And the taste? Lassi has that signature tangy yogurt flavour, while smoothies lean more neutral or sweet, depending on what you toss in.
So, are you team lassi or team smoothie? 😄

What does lassi consist of?
Having 4 servings in mind, these are the ingredients we use:
- Mangos (Woww… I was not expecting that one coming) — now seriously, it can be 2 canned mango pulp or chopped fresh mangos.
If you happen to live in a country without good fresh mangos, you can come around by using canned mango pulp!
PRO TIP: If you are using fresh mangos that are super fibrous, make sure to blend them before you add in the yogurt!
- 2 Cups of Greek Yogurt
Traditionally, lassi is made with Dahi (Indian Yogurt), which is different from the greek yogurt.
This is because Dahi has whey in it. So if you use Greek Yogurt, you got to watch out for the consistency of the drink.
- 1 Cup of Milk or Cream
Added not only to bring the right consistency, but also to help cut down the sourness of the yogurt.
- 2.5 tbsp Sweetener or sugar
If your mango isn’t fresh and ripe, or if you’re using mango pulp, you might need to add more or less sugar to the lassi.
Honey and even maple syrup also work fine, if that’s what you prefer.
- Ice
(optional — 6 cubes during summer time can be nice, and also helps with consistency).
Mango Lassi Recipe
It’s super quick to make it at home — just 5/10 minutes max!

1) Chill the Ingredients (Optional)
If possible, start by chilling the mango pulp, yogurt, and milk before blending to keep the lassi extra cold.
Lassi is always served chilled, so it’s great if you can refrigerate the mango pieces for a few hours ahead of time. You can even chill the mango lassi after blending, but chilling the ingredients first makes it better!
No time to chill? No worries!
Just add ice cubes while blending to achieve that refreshing, cold texture.
2) Blend the Ingredients
In a blender, combine mango pulp, yogurt, milk, sugar (adjust to taste), ground cardamom.
Blend for 1–2 minutes until smooth and creamy.
3) Adjust Consistency & Taste
Once blended, the next step is to look out for thickness and flavour.
- If the lassi is too thick, add a little more milk.
- If it’s not sweet enough, add more sugar.
4) Serve & Enjoy
- Pour into glasses and serve immediately.
- For extra chill, refrigerate for an hour before serving.
And that, my friends, makes the classic Mango Lassi!

How many days is mango lassi good for?
Mango lassi is best enjoyed fresh, but if you have leftovers, you can store it in the fridge for about 1 to 2 days.
Just make sure to keep it in an airtight container to maintain its flavour and creaminess.
TIP: If it starts to separate, give it a good stir before drinking.
